IHS Markit’s Ed Marhefka on why participate in Finadium’s Investors in Securities Lending Conference

We spoke with Ed Marhefka, Managing Director and Global Co-Head of Securities Finance and Delta One products at IHS Markit, to hear why his firm is sponsoring Finadium’s Investors in Securities Lending Conference (FISL) in 2018. For IHS Markit, the event is about demonstrating the forward-thinking nature of the business.

SFM: Why has your firm decided to participate in the Finadium Investors in Securities Lending (FISL) conference?

Ed Marhefka: IHS Markit sponsored the FISL conference again this year because our clients rely on us to provide a data-driven conversation that includes an analysis of trends and themes in the securities finance marketplace. Last year, FISL provided a platform for an informed, transparent debate around key industry issues, and we want to continue to be a vital part of that narrative.

SFM: Why do you think clients will benefit from attending?

EM: Clients who attend will benefit from hearing from a diverse group of industry thought leaders on evolving regulatory, technological and operational issues. Staying educated and informed is essential in order to thrive in our industry.

SFM: Do you see new opportunities for clients in financing markets?

EM: Securities finance continues to play a critical role in efficient capital markets. At IHS Markit, we are excited about the prospects for new technology, such as Artificial Intelligence and Distributed Ledger Technology, in contributing to market efficiencies. We also engage with our clients on revenue optimization and risk mitigation strategies, helping them realize the potential of their portfolios.

SFM: Are there specific types of professionals who would benefit from a greater understanding of this market, and who should be sure to attend the conference?

EM: Securities finance touches many areas throughout an organization. Our client base ranges from portfolio finance traders, portfolio managers, quantitative analysts, and long-only managers, to the more traditional securities finance professionals, such as agent lenders, prime brokers, and treasuries. All of these clients can benefit from an enhanced understanding of our marketplace.

SFM: What’s different in the market this year compared to last year?

EM: Without giving too much away, we are cautiously optimistic about the outlook for specials in 2018… readers will have to attend the FISL conference to hear the rest of the story!
