The financing argument for hedge funds to set up accounts with retail brokers

Our report on Fully Paid securities lending this week shows an increase in activity in securities lending and short selling at retail brokers. If that’s the case, then should every hedge fund shorting on a non-quantitative strategy be setting up a retail brokerage account to capture their lending inventory without intermediaries? This is plausible but may not be operationally feasible or all that helpful in the end.
