The Federal Reserve issued a white paper on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) last week, “Money and Payments: The U.S. Dollar in the Age of Digital Transformation.” The paper takes a neutral approach towards CBDC, not calling out one position or another. It’s an important step, showing that the Fed is serious about gathering public input on the opportunities and challenges of CBDC for both the US market and globally.
