Connecting the SEC’s new UST dealer and mandatory clearing rules

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) passed a new rule last week requiring certain private funds trading US Treasuries (UST) to become broker-dealers, ending over 90 years of precedent. There is a direct relationship to the rule passed in December 2023 on mandatory clearing of UST cash and repo.
