Brazil central bank picks 14 participants for DvP protocol CBDC pilot

The Central Bank of Brazil (BC) received 36 proposals of interest in participating in Pilot Real Digital (RD), including individual applications and consortia of entities, totaling more than 100 institutions from various financial segments.

In this phase of the RD Pilot, privacy and programmability functionalities will be tested through the implementation of a specific use case – a delivery versus payment (DvP) protocol for a federal public security between customers from different institutions, in addition to the services that make up this transaction.

This use case allows focusing on privacy tests, as it promotes the exchange of information between the various platform participants, and also tests the programmability of the offered services and their interoperability.

The initial selection has representatives from financial institutions from the prudential segments S1 to S4, payment institutions, cooperatives, public banks, crypto asset service developers, financial market infrastructure operators and payment arrangement institutes.

Based on the criteria established in the RD Pilot Regulation , 14 interested parties were selected including Bradesco, BTG, Banco do Brasil, Santander, Itaú Unibanco, B3 and B3 Digitas, among them. Based on the final selection, BC will begin incorporating participants into the Real Digital Pilot platform by mid-June 2023.
